The subject of divorce and children is a very interesting and multifaceted one. During divorce proceedings, children generally blame themselves for the split, secretly hope their parents will get back together, resent a boyfriend/girlfriend of the parent, seeing them as a “replacement”, choose sides, and learn how to play one parent against the other.
Parents, on the other hand, want to be the favorite…the parent the child/ren wants to come to, stay with, spend more time with. Often parents disparage the other or “buy” a child’s love just to outdo the other parent.
Sometimes children adjust very well to the divorce situation and sometimes they act out, become violent, or exhibit other troublesome behaviors. Divorce is a tough but necessary choice and children become a sensitive topic. My advice is to watch your children closely and if they develop any problems, get them professional help at the outset.
