What Happens If You Are The Unpopular Parent

by Robin Roshkind, Esquire, West Palm Beach, Florida

The subject of divorce and children is a very interesting and multifaceted one.  During divorce proceedings, children generally blame themselves for the split, secretly hope their parents will get back together, resent a boyfriend/girlfriend of the parent, seeing them as a “replacement”, choose sides, and learn how to play one parent against the other.

Parents, on the other hand, want to be the favorite…the parent the child/ren wants to come to, stay with, spend more time with. Often parents disparage the other or “buy” a child’s love just to outdo the other parent.

Sometimes children adjust very well to the divorce situation and sometimes they act out, become violent, or exhibit other troublesome behaviors.  Divorce is a tough but necessary choice and children become a sensitive topic.  My advice is to watch your children closely and if they develop any problems, get them professional help at the outset.  For more information about this or other divorce topics, call one of the divorce lawyers at ROBIN ROSHKIND, P.A. at 561 835 9091 or click on the Firm’s web site at www.familylawwpb.com for more information.
