How To Avoid Theft During Divorce

By Robin Roshkind, Esquire, West Palm Beach, Florida

It happens quite often…a wife’s jewelry is “stolen” during divorce proceedings…or a man’s watch has gone “missing” off the bedside table.  Shananigans are inevitable in contested cases where there is a “get even” mentality.

This is unfortunate for all involved, but it can be prevented.  Be careful where you place your valuables.  If you are going through that nasty divorce, you do need to protect yourself.   Take photos and document furniture and artwork.

Engagement rings are not objects of divorce.  Put it in a safe place.  Car keys often disappear as well.  Common sense tells us, do not leave these things laying around and accessible.  Same holds true for important papers.  Box them up and give them to your attorney.
