Children who are going through a divorce right along with the parents often blame themselves for the breakup. They are also used as a go between or messenger. And sometimes children are taught to hate the other spouse, depending upon the circumstances. In Palm Beach County this is recognized by the courts as parental alienation syndrome or PAS. There is even a Florida statute which admonishes disparaging the other parent to a child.
In some cases, there is drug or alcohol abuse as well as child abuse. Fighting and screaming in front of children are common. Domestic violence and serious threats to safety happen or involve the kids when it shouldn’t happen at all.
When you are going through a divorce, things are tense, money is tight, emotions run high. But don’t forget to put yourself in your children’s place and see you and your spouse through their eyes. You might shock yourself.
