Often in divorce women feel passionate about leaving the marriage with the heirloom china, sterling silver, and jewelry. Men, too, have their passions which extend to boats, cars, motorcyles, gun collections, stamp collections and the big screen TV.
While gun, coin, wine and stamp collections may appreciate over time, one thing to consider in any settlement negotiation is depreciating assets such as the boat, ATV, or RV. The rule for men and women for that matter is that depreciating assets as well as appreciating assets should be split 50/50. In other words, don’t settle on giving the wife the entire $500,000 home (an appreciating asset) in exchange for the entire $500,000 yacht (a depreciating asset).
Divorce takes place in a court of equity. That means fairness. Be aware of the fairness of any settlement. For more information about this or other divorce topics, call one of the attorneys at ROBIN ROSHKIND, P.A. at 561-835-9091 or click on the Firm’s web site at www.familylawwpb.com.
